Halo Infinite gets Battle Royale mode from another studio

The Xbox Two Podcast reveals details about a Halo Battle Royale that has been in the works for over two years.

Last year, 343 Industries finally revealed the long-awaited newest installment of the beloved Halo franchise. The Halo series became an instant classic under Bungie Studios, which led the first six entries. 343 Industries, a subsidiary of Microsoft, took control of the Halo franchise in 2011. Fans were divided over the direction of the series, but many of Halo's crucial gameplay elements and characters remained intact.

Halo Infinite arrived in 2021 after a six-year hiatus. The game's fan base was enthusiastic, given the time 343 Industries had to produce an excellent product. Unfortunately, many felt that Infinite was incomplete, referring to a mediocre multiplayer experience and no co-op campaign from the beginning. On top of these criticisms, the community at large was hoping that 343 would dive into the Battle Royale genre.

While this was not the case, details have recently come to light about a Halo Infinite Battle Royale mode. So far, the information points to a planned release of season three for the Halo BR that many have been calling for.

Xbox Two Podcast hosts Jez and Rand revealed the information Halo Infinite fans were looking for. You can fast forward to the 2:15:00 mark to listen to a full breakdown. Additionally, a Redditor named RoyaltyXIII provided a list of bullet points on the GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit:

  • Is a battle royale
  • Been in development for over 2 years
  • Is a big deal. Considers it to be a Warzone/apart game venture
  • The goal is to bring new players into the Halo franchise
  • Fortnite/Warzone/Apex target audience to be targeted
  • Believes it is targeting season 3 or 4
  • Also ties into the Forge mode (maybe like Fortnite Creative? [my speculation])
  • They brought in Certain Affinity for this particular mode, „don't think they're going to ignore the rest of the game“

This new game mode could make or break the future of the Halo franchise. It's no secret that Battle Royale titles dominate viewership on Twitch and YouTube, with names like Fortnite, Warzone and Apex Legends at the top of the food chain. Halo's struggles on these streaming platforms have been well documented in recent months. Last month, Jake Lucky of Full Squad Gaming said it best with a tweet, „Halo Infinite desperately needs something … like anything.“

The criticism of Halo Infinite and 343 Industries goes beyond the media to professional and casual players. Infinite's ranked mode leaves much to be desired and fans of the series desperately want answers and improvement. 343 recently enlisted the help of Certain Affinity, a Texas-based game developer known for its work on several Call of Duty and Halo titles.

The pieces are beginning to fall into place, as Certain Affinity recently agreed to continue developing Halo Infinite. All signs point to Certain Affinity playing an instrumental role in the upcoming Halo BR. 343 and Certain Affinity have yet to comment on the rumors which have taken on a life of their own.
