G2 Esports wins Verizon 5G Ultra Cup

G2 Esports has won the Verizon 5G Ultra Cup, the first regional of the spring season. The American Rocket League team, which also won the Winter Split Major in March, needed two series to beat Spacestation Gaming in a tense final.

The first rounds of the Verizon 5G Ultra Cup had some immediate surprises. Both NRG Esports and Complexity were eliminated in the second round. Both teams are normally among North America's elite. The positive surprise was without a doubt Ghost Gaming. That team had a dramatic winter season, but managed to recover with a handsome fourth place this weekend.

In the semifinals of the losers bracket it lost to FaZe Clan who then lost to Spacestation Gaming and finished third. The latter team thus won the losers bracket and entered the grand final against G2 Esports. Both teams played against each other earlier in the tournament, when G2 managed to win convincingly (4-2).

The finals started strongly with G2 Esports winning a game, but it was Spacestation that put their backs into it and managed to win the first series 4-3 in games, of which the last game was 7-0. Because G2 had not lost yet in the tournament it got a second chance. It seized this opportunity with both hands. Despite not always being convincing, G2 managed to decide the final 4-2.

Next week is the first European Spring regional, the Dacia Spring Cup. A total of three regionals are played in each region, followed by a major in which the best teams from each region participate. Besides teams from Europe and North America, organizations from South America, Asia, the Middle East and Oceania will also participate in the tournament, which runs from June 29 to July 3.
