E3 2022 has been officially cancelled
Despite the original plans for a digital version of E3, the Entertainment Software Association has cancelled the event. The decision to cancel E3 did not come out of the blue. There have been many rumors about this decision in recent months, even after the ESA made an announcement confirming that E3 would be without an audience, regardless. At the time, the company did not confirm whether a digital event would be organized.
Now it has been confirmed by multiple sources, including IGN, that E3 2022 has been cancelled entirely.
Developers will hold their own showcases
Now that E3 2022 is no longer on the table, more game developers and publishers are likely to host their own digital showcases. Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest will also likely play a larger role this year in revealing games and presenting new information for older games.
E3 has been considered one of the biggest gaming and entertainment events for years. E3 began in 1995 and quickly grew into one of the biggest events for new reveals and information. In 2020, the event also went off due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and in 2021 it switched to an online format of the showcase.
E3 returns in 2023
E3, according to an email sent to ESA partners regarding the cancellation, will return in 2023 as a „revamped showcase showcasing new video games and industry innovations.“
The reinvented version of E3 is planned as a physical and digital experience with the goal of bringing together the community, the media and the industry as a whole. This is intended to be done through a completely new format with interactive experiences. The physical portion of the event will still be held live in Los Angeles.
