Rotterdam hosts Winter of Esports

After two successful editions of the Summer of Esports, Rotterdam now hosts the Winter of Esports. During the two weeks of the Christmas vacations the city is dedicated to esports. From December 27 until January 7 Rotterdam youngsters from 6 to 27 years old can visit the city for unique experiences.

12 Days of Esports

The event has a varied program for the youth in the districts called 12 Days of Esports. Throughout the Christmas vacations there are activities to experience at various locations that focus on gaming, esports and gamification. Through VR and F1 simulators young people are challenged to be active, in addition there are also activities such as Real Life Fortnite or the Rotterdam Cycling Tour. The goal of the event is to promote the well-being, knowledge and social skills of young people in a fun way.

Only Winners

During the Winter of Esports the finals of the Motivational FIFA Tournament ‚Only Winners in Rotterdam‘ will also take place. During the tournament young people are paired with BN'ers, including Mart Hoogkamer, Rico Verhoeven, Eljero Elia, Tisjeboyjay and Edson de Graça.

Young people can already participate in the preliminary rounds that take place throughout Rotterdam in schools, community centers and online. More than 500 young people can participate, of which only 32 qualify for the finals on December 30.

The youngsters are then paired with one of the 32 participating BN'ers to form a duo. Each duo represents a city district in a two-on-two competition.

Alderman for Public Health, Care, the Elderly and Sport, Christine Eskes says that esports and gaming can no longer be ignored in our society. „In Rotterdam we embrace the popularity of gaming and esports. We experience the social added value and see opportunities to connect young people with esports and gaming,“ says Eskes.

Daily life has changed a lot because of corona, but the municipality of Rotterdam wants young people to get through the corona crisis well. Through Winter of Esports, many social activities for young people can take place in Rotterdam despite corona.
