Overwatch League season 2022 kicks off on May 5

After the longest vacation in esports history, the new season of the Overwatch League will finally return. This was announced yesterday via Twitter.

The Overwatch League further confirmed that Overwatch 2 will be part of the 2022 season. The sequel’s five-on-five mode will be an important part of the season. Players will also have to compete in the new Overwatch 2 mode ‚Push‘. This mode will replace the Assault game mode.

New structure

In addition to the confirmed start date, details about the structure of the new season have also been revealed. For example, there will be a six-day Mid Season Global Tournament with a prize pool of $1 million(880,000 euros).

This Mid Season tournament, called Midseason Madness, will give four teams from the East Region and eight teams from the West Region the chance to win this prize pool.

The last tournament of the year, the Countdown Cup, will serve as a „wild card“ for the post-season. This Wild Card will allow two teams the opportunity to qualify for this tournament, if they do not manage to qualify through the League Points system.

League Points

The League Points system was introduced last year as a means of adding more value to victories. While this worked well, the modified system for the 2022 season will fix some of the problems that the 2021 season had.

From now on, each qualifying match won will earn 1 League Point. However when it comes to tournaments, teams will receive 1 point just for qualifying.
