Time moves continuously in Fallout 4, and most of the time you can ignore it. However, certain quests, character schedules, and shop hours require you to be present at specific times of day.
You can skip ahead by waiting, as long as you are safe and near a place to sit or rest. While the system feels familiar if you have played other Bethesda RPGs, it includes a small difference that you need to understand before relying on it.
How to Wait in Fallout 4
You can advance in-game time by sitting on a chair, bench, or similar seat. Approach the object and interact with it to sit down.
Once seated, the game displays a prompt that lets you choose how many hours to pass. Select the number of hours, confirm, and the clock will move forward instantly.
You can also use a bed instead of a chair. Beds allow you to sleep rather than simply wait, which provides extra benefits beyond time advancement.
Sleeping restores lost health without consuming Stimpaks or food. In Survival mode, you also avoid hunger and thirst damage while you sleep.
Using waiting strategically helps you access vendors during business hours, trigger time-based quests, or travel during daylight.
Earning the Well-Rested Bonus
Sleep on a bed you own or rent for at least one hour to gain the Well Rested bonus. This effect increases all experience gained by 10% for eight in-game hours.
Not every bed qualifies. You must use a bed that belongs to you or one you have paid to use, including sleeping bags under normal difficulty settings.
In Survival mode, the rules change:
- You must sleep for at least seven hours on a valid bed.
- Sleeping bags do not grant the bonus because they limit sleep duration.
- You also receive small boosts to Agility (AGI) and Endurance (END) while the effect is active.
If you develop a romantic relationship with a companion, sharing a bed upgrades the bonus to Lover’s Embrace. This version increases your experience gain by 15% instead of 10% for the same duration.
Plan your rest periods before major quests or combat-heavy sections to maximize experience gains.
