If you want to revisit Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, you can now download it directly from Steam as its own standalone title. Valve has restored CS as a separate listing, so you no longer need to access it through Counter-Strike 2 or navigate beta branches.
This change gives you a straightforward way to install and launch the classic version of the game. You can return to the original experience without modifying files or managing alternate builds.
CS Returns to Steam, But Is Online Play Available?
You can access Counter-Strike: Global Offensive on Steam again, although Valve keeps the store page unlisted. If you navigate directly to the page, you can add the game to your Library at no cost. Steam treats it as a separate application from Counter-Strike 2.
Your previous playtime does not transfer back to this version. All recorded hours remain attached to CS2, and this standalone build does not restore legacy achievements.
When CS2 launched in September 2023, Valve removed official online support for CS to focus the player base on one title. That decision limited your ability to queue through official servers and pushed all competitive matchmaking into CS2.
So what can you do now?
- Download and launch CS as a standalone client
- Join community-run servers
- Host or join private matches
- Connect directly via server IP
You cannot access official matchmaking. Valve has not reintroduced ranked play or standard queue systems for this release.
| Feature | Status in Standalone CS |
|---|---|
| Official Matchmaking | Not available |
| Community Servers | Available |
| Private Lobbies | Available |
| Legacy Achievements | Not restored |
| Previous Playtime | Locked to CS2 |
If you want structured competitive play through Valve’s official systems, you must use CS2. If you prefer classic mechanics and community-hosted matches, this version allows you to reconnect with that experience.
