Respawn has adjusted Octane once again as it works to control his strength in Season 28 of Apex Legends. Although the Breach season launched on February 10, the developer has already pushed multiple updates to fine-tune the game’s evolving character balance.
Season 28 introduced notable changes, including a rework for Fuse and updates to Catalyst and Bloodhound, yet Octane continues to dominate pick rates at 17.4%. His popularity surged after Season 27 enhanced his Jump Pad and added Stim Surge, which granted damage resistance through Fortified. If you play regularly, you have likely felt how those upgrades reshaped fights and kept Octane at the center of the meta.
Apex Legends Nerfs Octane's Stim Surge
Respawn adjusted Octane again after players pushed his rework to its limits. On January 23, the studio reduced the power of Swift Mend, aiming to tone down how safely you could sustain through fights. That change did not fully solve the issue.
The February 23 update delivered a more direct hit to Stim Surge.
- Fortified removed from Stim Surge
- Base speed boost reduced when activating Stim
- Movement still faster than pre–Season 27 levels
By removing Fortified, Respawn stripped away the extra damage resistance that made Octane unusually durable for a high-mobility Legend. You no longer gain that added toughness during Stim Surge, which lowers your advantage in close-range duels. The reduced speed boost also limits how aggressively you can push or disengage.
Even with these nerfs, Stim Surge keeps meaningful utility. You still regenerate health while taking damage during the Tactical’s effect, which supports risky repositioning plays. That healing component helps you survive while crossing open ground or escaping pressure, though you cannot rely on raw durability the way you could before.
Community feedback has largely supported the February 23 adjustments. Many players view the changes as necessary to reduce his dominance without stripping away his identity as a fast-entry fragger.
Respawn’s broader roadmap shows more Legend updates ahead, including a new character planned for Season 29. As the roster expands through 2026 and into 2027, you can expect continued balance passes similar to Octane’s recent tuning.
Apex Legends February 23 Update – Patch Notes
Respawn deployed a balance patch that targets Octane after reviewing early Season 28 data. You will notice direct reductions to the most aggressive parts of his recent rework.
Octane Adjustments
- Stim Surge: Fortified perk removed
- Stim: Speed boost reduced, but it remains stronger than its pre-27.0 version
Developers acted after tracking high pick rates and strong fight outcomes during the season’s opening week. You can still use Octane’s updated mobility tools, but you will no longer benefit from the added durability tied to Stim Surge.
