Last Of Us Part 2 Online Multiplayer Mod

You have waited years for a proper multiplayer experience in The Last of Us Part 2, but none has arrived. Naughty Dog released the game in 2020 to strong critical praise and major awards, yet it focused entirely on single-player storytelling. Fans who expected a return of competitive play found nothing included at launch.

You may remember that the original game featured Factions, a multiplayer mode that built a dedicated audience alongside Joel and Ellie’s story. Plans for a standalone online project later fell through, leaving the series without versus multiplayer for more than a decade. Now, with no official mode in development, a modder has stepped in to build one for PC players.

Last of Us 2 Multiplayer Mod Is on the Way

You will not see an official PvP mode added to The Last of Us Part 2. Naughty Dog has shifted its focus to Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, and the studio canceled its standalone online project set in the same universe.

That shift opened the door for the modding community.

A PC modder known as Speclizer is building a custom multiplayer experience for The Last of Us Part 2. Instead of a traditional expansion, this project modifies the existing PC version of the game to support player-versus-player encounters using familiar characters.

Recent footage shows roughly 25 minutes of active gameplay, including multiple characters moving through Seattle environments together. The build remains a work in progress, but it already demonstrates functional multiplayer sessions inside a game originally designed as single-player only.

You can expect the mod to launch in September, according to the creator.

Platform Availability

This project comes with one major limitation:

  • PC only
  • Not supported on PlayStation consoles
  • Requires the PC release of The Last of Us Part 2

You cannot install or run this mod on PS4 or PS5. Console ecosystems do not allow the same level of file modification that PC platforms support.

For many players, this situation highlights one of the core differences between platforms. On PC, modding tools and community experimentation can extend a game’s lifespan well beyond its original scope. On consoles, you rely entirely on official developer support.

Where This Leaves the Series

You may wonder whether an official multiplayer mode could still return in a future installment.

While The Last of Us Part 3 has been hinted at in the past, no formal announcement confirms its development. Naughty Dog previously invested time into a standalone online project before canceling it, and there is no guarantee that work will resurface in another form.

That uncertainty makes community-driven efforts more significant for players who want competitive or cooperative gameplay set in this world.

For now, if you want to experience multiplayer combat inside The Last of Us Part 2, the upcoming PC mod represents the only confirmed path forward.

Have your say!
