Fortnite Game Modes Shutting Down

You are seeing major changes at Epic Games after the company confirmed it cut around 1,000 jobs on March 24. The decision follows declining engagement with Fortnite, and it signals broader financial pressure despite the game’s long history of high-profile collaborations.

You will also notice changes inside the game itself, as Rocket Racing, Ballistic, and Festival Battle Stage are set to shut down in 2026. Fortnite built its reputation on constant expansion and crossover events, but this restructuring shows a shift in priorities that will directly affect how you experience the platform moving forward.

Which Fortnite Game Modes Are Leaving in 2026?

Epic Games will remove three Fortnite experiences during 2026. Each mode has a confirmed shutdown date, and the timeline affects quests, tools, and creator content.

Mode Removal Date Key Details
Ballistic April 16, 2026 Removed with update v40.20
Festival Battle Stage April 16, 2026 Removed with update v40.20
Rocket Racing October 2026 Quests end in late March; full removal in October

You will lose access to Ballistic and Festival Battle Stage on April 16, 2026. Epic will disable both modes as part of the v40.20 update. After that date, you will not be able to queue for or launch either experience.

Although Ballistic will disappear as a playable mode, first-person shooter tools will remain available inside Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). This means you can still build FPS-style islands, even though the official playlist ends.

Festival Battle Stage will shut down separately from the rest of Fortnite Festival. The Festival Main Stage and Festival Jam Stage will continue operating without changes. Only the competitive Battle Stage variant leaves the platform.

Rocket Racing will stay active longer but faces a phased shutdown. Epic will remove Rocket Racing Quests starting the week of March 30, 2026. You will no longer earn additional Ranked rewards for the mode after previously scheduled updates roll out in April.

Epic plans to deliver certain pre-announced updates before ending long-term support. After October 2026, you will no longer access Rocket Racing through Fortnite at all.

If you create content, you still have options. Epic will allow you to transfer compatible cars, tracks, and related assets to standalone UEFN islands before the October cutoff. However, the dedicated Rocket Racing track template in UEFN will also be removed.

These changes follow broader restructuring within Epic Games. The company confirmed significant staff reductions while outlining adjustments to its live service strategy. Industry-wide layoffs across other major publishers have also shaped the current environment.

You may notice speculation about how these removals affect upcoming collaborations. Fortnite recently introduced high-profile crossover skins, and additional partnerships have been rumored. Epic has not confirmed whether licensing plans will change alongside the mode shutdowns.

Fortnite first launched on September 26, 2017, and carries a T for Teen ESRB rating for diverse content, in-game purchases, and user interaction. Epic Games develops and publishes the title.

For now, you can continue playing the affected modes until their respective shutdown dates. After those deadlines pass, they will no longer appear in the Fortnite mode selection menu.
