Starfield Free Lanes Update 1.16.236 Patch Notes April 2026

You can now download Update 1.16.236 for Starfield, also known as the Free Lanes update. Since its 2023 launch on PC and Xbox Series X/S, the game has received steady support, including the Shattered Space expansion, as Bethesda continued to build on its open-world space RPG.

With Free Lanes, you can travel seamlessly through open space instead of relying only on warp jumps, alongside new gear, vehicles, locations, and quality-of-life improvements. You can also explore the paid Terran Armada expansion, which adds a new storyline and robotic enemies, while PlayStation 5 players can access the full experience for the first time.

Starfield Update 1.16.236 Patch Notes

Update 1.16.236, also known as the Free Lanes update, expands space travel, deepens gear customization, and adds new systems across exploration, combat, and progression. The patch is available on all platforms and coincides with the launch of the paid Terran Armada story expansion.

Space Travel and Exploration

The headline feature, Free Lanes, introduces a cruise-style flight mode within individual star systems. You can now manually travel through open space between planets and points of interest instead of relying solely on fast travel.

The update also adds:

  • Anchorpoint Station in the Algorab system
  • New dungeons and space encounters
  • Additional planetary points of interest
  • Adjusted POI spawn frequency and cooldown timers

These changes increase activity between planets and give you more reasons to remain in-system rather than skipping directly to destinations.

A new vehicle, the Moon Jumper, expands planetary traversal options. Photomode also includes extra poses for the Rev-8.

Equipment, Crafting, and Customization

Update 1.16.236 significantly expands gear progression.

X‑Tech crafting now supports weapons and suits, allowing you to refine legendary traits instead of relying entirely on random drops. You can further modify equipment using:

  • New quality tiers for weapons and suits
  • Rank 4 legendary effects
  • Upgrade modules that enhance a single stat
  • Additional weapon skins applied at workbenches

Loot quality from Expert and Master-locked containers has improved, rewarding higher-level lockpicking.

  • NPC weapon damage calculation problems

You can now jump while reloading the XM-2311, Old Earth Pistol, and Livingstone’s Pistol.

  • Receiving Quantum Essence when destroying Starborn ships

These changes strengthen long-term character growth across New Game cycles.

The update also improves workbench placement in homes and ships, reducing building friction.

Interface and Menu Additions

A new Database menu tracks discovered locations, resources, and crafting recipes based on your character’s knowledge. This tool centralizes exploration data and reduces reliance on memory.

Other UI improvements include:
