Pokémon Champions now has an official release date, and you can soon experience its focused approach to competitive battling. The upcoming title centers on streamlined battles that follow core series mechanics, bringing familiar systems like types, moves, and Abilities into a dedicated format.
As launch approaches, you may still have questions about its features, platforms, and long-term support. While key details are confirmed, the full scope of what you can expect at release continues to come into focus.
What Is Pokémon Champions?
Pokémon Champions is a dedicated competitive battle game within the Pokémon series. You face other trainers online and build teams designed around your preferred strategies.
The game centers on 3‑on‑3 matches, requiring you to choose three Pokémon that work well together. Each decision shapes your matchup approach and win conditions.
You use familiar core mechanics, including:
- Types
- Abilities
- Moves
- Standard battle rules from the main series
Pokémon Champions will also serve as the official platform for the Video Game Championships (VGC). Organized tournaments will take place within this system, positioning it as the primary hub for competitive Pokémon battles outside of the Trading Card Game.
Release date
You can play Pokémon Champions on April 8, 2026.
It stands as the series’ third major 2026 release, arriving after Leaf Green and ahead of Pokopia for you.
Compatible systems
You can play Pokémon Champions on the Nintendo Switch and the newer Nintendo Switch 2. The game supports both systems at launch.
A mobile edition is also planned. You will be able to access it on smartphones later in 2026, though the exact release date for mobile devices has not been announced.
Home compatibility
You can link the game to Pokémon HOME and pull in Pokémon you already store there. This connection lets you battle with creatures transferred from past titles, provided they are supported in Champions.
It remains unclear how you obtain Pokémon outside of HOME. The game has not confirmed whether you will catch and train them through a dedicated mode or rely entirely on transfers.
Keep these points in mind:
- Transfer eligible Pokémon from HOME into Champions
- Compatibility limits may apply
- Access requires a linked Nintendo Account
Champions follows a free-to-play model and includes optional in-game purchases.
