Overwatch 2 Retires Hero Mastery Mode
Blizzard Entertainment confirmed that Hero Mastery, a solo training mode in Overwatch 2, will be removed from the game with the launch of Season 19. This change also means that all associated courses will no longer be available once the new season begins.
Players still have the remainder of Season 18 to complete any lifetime challenges tied to the mode before it is permanently retired. With its removal, one of the game’s last structured practice features will no longer be part of the Overwatch 2 experience.
Overwatch 2 retires Hero Mastery mode
Blizzard confirmed that Hero Mastery will be removed across Seasons 18 and 19, with all courses ending once Season 19 begins later in 2025. The decision reflects a shift in development priorities, as the team directs resources toward modes with higher engagement such as Quick Play, Competitive, and the newer Stadium feature.
The mode originally offered timed obstacle runs and ability-focused challenges for individual heroes, but it never gained the same traction as core playlists. By discontinuing it, developers aim to streamline the game’s offerings and concentrate on areas most players actively use.
Key focus areas moving forward:
- Quick Play
- Competitive
- Stadium
- Future experimental modes
This change marks the end of one of the last dedicated solo practice options in Overwatch 2.
Overwatch 2 Hero Mastery mode update
Hero Mastery first appeared in Season 6 and steadily expanded until it reached a total of 17 unique courses. These courses were distributed across all roles:
| Role | Number of Courses | Heroes Included |
|---|---|---|
| Tank | 4 | D.Va, Reinhardt, Winston, Zarya |
| Damage | 9 | Ashe, Cassidy, Echo, Genji, Mei, Pharah, Sojourn, Soldier: 76, Tracer |
| Support | 4 | Brigitte, Kiriko, Lucio, Mercy |
Each course functioned as a timed challenge where players navigated obstacles, defeated bots, and collected emblems. The system rewarded higher performance with stars, which unlocked tougher versions of each course. This design encouraged players to refine their skills while competing for faster completion times.
By Season 18, Blizzard confirmed that no additional courses would be introduced. Ashe’s course, released in January 2025, marked the final addition to the mode. Players still had the opportunity to pursue lifetime challenges tied to Hero Mastery until the end of Season 18.
Rewards included:
- Epic Loot Box for completing Mastery I
- Exclusive Player Title for completing Mastery III
- Placement on the Top 500 leaderboard for standout performances
These incentives gave players a reason to revisit older courses and push for higher rankings before the mode was retired.
Although Hero Mastery will not see future updates, developers acknowledged the strong participation it received. They also emphasized that new ways to showcase player dedication would arrive in future seasons, ensuring that the spirit of skill-based challenges continues in other forms.
