ManUnited goalkeeper David De Gea founds eSports club

The next professional footballer is getting into eSports. David De Gea of Manchester United has founded a new organization and expressed great ambitions.

Many professional footballers are also gamers and more and more now want to organize themselves professionally in the video game sector. The quota of well-known personalities from the grassroots sport who enter the virtual field continues to increase.

Now the next case is here: David De Gea, longtime goalkeeper for Manchester United and the Spanish national soccer team, has announced the creation of a new organization. Rebels Gaming is to compete in three video games and follow lofty ambitions.

Ambitious goals and marketing campaign

Unlike some of his colleagues, such as Jesse Lingard, De Gea and his organization are serious from the start. The goals set and the marketing are ambitious. Rebels Gaming, for example, is not just „a dream come true“ for the 31-year-old goalkeeper. His eSports club also aims to become a „global reference club“ that will „have a positive impact on society.“

Three teams to start with

Leaving aside the somewhat pathetic rhetoric – and the marketing to go with it, including a pretentious promotional video – the project actually sounds exciting: Rebels Gaming is to compete in League of Legends and Valorant from Riot Games, as well as Rainbow Six: Siege from Ubisoft, so it will feature three different teams at once.

In addition, a broad team of experts „in various disciplines, such as sports strategy and tactics, marketing, entertainment and business development“ is said to have already been hired. A dedicated gaming center in Madrid is also to follow.

Whether the big words will be followed by corresponding deeds remains to be seen. The goals are ambitious and the promises impressive. If these are pursued consistently, this project could be a success. A well-known name from soccer has already shown how it can work, namely David Beckham with Guild Esports.
