GTA 6 hacker now stuck in juvenile prison
The suspected hacker of the break-in at Rockstar, in which much footage of GTA 6 was leaked, has now been transferred to juvenile prison. London police have confirmed that.
The game industry was shocked earlier this month by a sudden leak of GTA 6 gameplay. It is not uncommon for footage to come out early, but often it is just a few seconds of material and the game is already in a distant stage of development. Of GTA 6, only a huge amount of footage of early alpha gameplay leaked out.
The hacker suspected of the leak was previously apprehended by police, after even the FBI engaged in the manhunt. The suspect is a 17-year-old boy, who immediately appeared in court on Saturday. The London Police Cyber Crime Unit confirmed this to Eurogamer.
To the judge, the suspect pleads not guilty in the case of the hack at Rockstar. However, he does acknowledge that he violated the terms of his bail. According to police, the hacker has now been transferred to a juvenile detention center, where he will await further proceedings.
GTA 6 hacker part of larger group
Police suspect the hacker of being part of the hacker group Lapsus$. That group is reportedly responsible not only for the leak at Rockstar, but also for other digital intrusions. For example, the group is said to have been behind hacks at Nvidia, Uber and Microsoft.
Following the leaked gameplay of GTA 6, it also became clear that the perpetrators had obtained the game's source code. Through the GTA forum, Rockstar and Take-Two employees were urged to contact the hacker so that the code could be „negotiated.
