G2 Esports European champion League of Legends

G2 Esports is champion of Europe for the ninth time with a win in the League of Legends European Championship. In the final it defeated Rogue with resounding figures; 3-0. The victory allows G2 Esports to book airline tickets to South Korea, where the MSI tournament will take place next month.

Despite reaching the final via the upper bracket, Rogue was not the favorite tonight. In fact, G2 Esports cruised through the lower bracket. In the first round Vitality was defeated 3-0 and Team Misfits was also defeated with the same figures. Yesterday Fnatic was sent home 3-0. So with that G2 came to the finals with a 9-0 record.

It was the seventh time that Rasmus ‚Caps‘ Winther reached the final of the LEC, all six previous finals he managed to win, twice with Fnatic and four times with G2. That also this final was a prey for him became quickly clear. The first and second games were won with ease by the samurais of G2 Esports. In the third game Rogue offered a little more resistance, but in the end was no match for the record title holder. Incidentally, it was the first game in a long time to be played in front of an audience again.

This is the first title in twelve months for G2 Esports, which succeeds MAD Lions as European champion. That team took the European championship twice last year, but failed to qualify for the playoffs this time. On May 10, the Mid-Season Invitational tournament begins where G2 will play against other regional champions, including the undefeated T1 from South Korea. The starting date of the summer split of the LEC is not yet known, but judging from previous years it will most likely start in early or mid-June.
