Fortnite Zero Build Changes v40.40

Fortnite Zero Build enters a new phase with the v40.40 update on May 14. You will see core gameplay adjustments that go beyond routine loot pool updates and reshape how matches play out.

This update removes lethal fall damage, introduces new tools such as Pocket Items, and reworks key mechanics that define the mode. If you play Zero Build regularly, you can expect noticeable changes that affect movement, survivability, and overall strategy from the moment you drop in.

Every Zero Build Adjustment Arriving in v40.40

You will need to adjust quickly after the v40.40 update, as Zero Build now plays by a different set of rules. Several core mechanics shift how you move, survive, and approach fights.

One of the most important updates removes lethal fall damage. You can still take damage from high drops, but a fall will no longer eliminate you outright. Your health will stop at a minimum threshold instead of reaching zero.

Mobility also expands through two major glider updates. You can now manually cancel your glider to drop into a controlled fall, and Glider Redeploy is permanently enabled. These changes let you reposition from height without committing to a fixed landing path.

A new system called Pocket Items adds built-in utility each match. You spawn with one randomly assigned option, and you can use it without consuming charges.

Available Pocket Items:

  • Shockwave Grenades
  • Med Mist Grenades
  • Shield Bubbles

You can swap your assigned Pocket Item at Vending Machines if you prefer a different tool. This system ensures you always carry mobility, healing, or cover without sacrificing inventory space.

Combat flow changes as well. Each elimination now fully restores your Overshield, rewarding aggressive play and quick follow-up engagements. When you hold your Pickaxe, you also gain unlimited sprint stamina, allowing constant movement without exhaustion.

Environmental balance receives adjustments. Player-built and map structures take reduced weapon damage, extending the value of natural and placed cover.

Support systems improve too. Reboot Vans activate faster after use, helping squads recover teammates more efficiently.

The loot pool now leans further into defense and utility. Expect to find more protective tools, including:

  • Smoke Grenades
  • Brick-a-Bunkers

These additions reinforce positioning, survivability, and tactical resets rather than raw damage output.

Essential Update for a Core Playlist

You have played Zero Build the same way since its debut in March 2022. Epic kept the format largely intact, which helped you enjoy Fortnite without managing complex building mechanics, but it also left the mode feeling static over time.

The v40.40 update changes that rhythm. You step into a version that finally adjusts long-standing rules and refreshes core gameplay expectations.

What this means for you:

  • A reworked Zero Build experience after four years of stability
  • Integration into a broader seasonal patch
  • The arrival of the Overwatch crossover on May 14

You gain a familiar mode with noticeable structural changes, not just cosmetic additions tied to collaborations.
