Fortnite Downtime V40 20 Update April 2026

You can mark your calendar for April 16 at 4 AM ET, when Epic Games will take Fortnite offline for its next scheduled update. The game may have left early access years ago, but it still runs on a steady update cycle as a live service title. Chapter 7 Season 2 began on March 19 and has already introduced new content, including an April Fool’s event and the OG Pass in patch v40.10.

If you follow the usual pattern, you know updates typically arrive about every two weeks unless plans change. Epic Games shares a public roadmap, so you can track when each patch is expected and plan your playtime around scheduled downtime.

Fortnite Schedules Server Maintenance for v40.20

Epic Games has confirmed that update v40.20 will require scheduled downtime beginning on April 16, 2026, at 4 AM ET. At that time, servers will go offline across all supported platforms so the new patch can deploy.

You should plan ahead if you intend to play before maintenance begins. Matchmaking will shut down 30 minutes earlier, at 3:30 AM ET, which means you will not be able to queue into a new match after that point.

Downtime typically lasts a few hours. In this case, reports indicate servers returned around 7 AM ET, following roughly three hours of maintenance.

Key Timing Details

Event Time (ET) What It Means for You
Matchmaking Disabled 3:30 AM You cannot start a new match
Servers Go Offline 4:00 AM All modes become unavailable
Servers Expected Online Around 7:00 AM Gameplay resumes after patch deployment

This update affects the full Fortnite ecosystem, including Battle Royale, Zero Build, Reload, LEGO Fortnite experiences, Rocket Racing, Fortnite Festival, and Save the World. Because Fortnite operates as a live service across multiple platforms—PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile—synchronized downtime ensures that all players move to the same version simultaneously.

Major Additions in v40.20

This patch stands out for three primary reasons:

  • Fortnite Festival Season 14 launches
  • Pro Vocals and Pro Drums debut
  • Save the World transitions to free-to-play

Each change targets a different part of the community, from rhythm game fans to long-time PvE players.

Fortnite Festival Expands With New Features

Season 14 of Fortnite Festival arrives with new cosmetics and performance tools. If you follow featured artists, you can pick up themed outfits and accessories in the Item Shop, along with additional rewards available through the Music Pass.

The update also introduces Pro Vocals and Pro Drums support. You can plug a microphone into your console or PC and sing along to on-screen lyrics during Festival performances. The game scores your timing and pitch as you perform.

If you own compatible drum hardware, such as a Rock Band 4 drum kit, you can connect it and play drum tracks directly in-game. This hardware integration expands Festival beyond standard controller inputs and gives you more ways to participate.

Save the World Becomes Free for Everyone

The most significant structural change in v40.20 affects Save the World, the original cooperative PvE mode that launched in 2017.

Previously, you needed to purchase a Founder’s Pack or a Save the World Quest Pack to access the mode. Starting April 16, 2026, you can enter Save the World without buying a separate access bundle.

However, free access does not include every legacy benefit. Players who paid for early access retain certain perks, including the ability to earn V-Bucks through Save the World progression. If you begin playing now that it is free, you will not receive those V-Bucks rewards.

Save the World focuses on cooperative missions, resource collection, base building, and wave-based defense combat. If you enjoy structured objectives and tower defense mechanics, this mode offers a different pace compared to competitive Battle Royale.

What This Means for Your Play Schedule

Because Fortnite supports cross-platform play and cross-save through Epic accounts, downtime impacts all regions at once. Whether you play solo or in online co-op with up to four players, you must wait until servers come back online before accessing any mode.

If you planned early-morning sessions on April 16, you needed to finish matches before 3:30 AM ET. After that point, the system prevented new matchmaking entries.

Fortnite continues to operate as a multi-genre platform that includes survival, shooter, action, and creative experiences. With v40.20, Epic updates both its competitive and cooperative offerings while expanding music-based gameplay tools.

When servers return, you can immediately explore Festival Season 14, test microphone or drum compatibility, or jump into Save the World without a purchase requirement.
