Elden Ring Update September 2024
The recent update for Elden Ring introduces significant adjustments to the game’s Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, specifically targeting the final boss. The patch reduces the damage of certain attacks and diminishes the boss's attack range, addressing player concerns about difficulty. These changes follow a series of updates aimed at refining the player experience.
In addition to modifying the boss, the patch includes balance tweaks to the PvP mode and fixes various bugs that have plagued the game. These improvements are part of FromSoftware’s ongoing efforts to enhance gameplay and maintain the game’s popularity since its initial release in 2022.

Adjustments to the Final Boss
- The opening action pattern for the final boss in „Shadow of the Erdtree“ has been modified.
- Various attack moves have been recalibrated.
- The damage output for certain attacks has been reduced.
- Stamina damage inflicted by specific attacks has been lessened.
- The attack range of some non-weapon-based moves has been shortened.
- The visibility of certain attack effects has been enhanced.
PvP-exclusive balance adjustments
Equipment
- The damage from Backhand Blades against other players has been reduced. This change does not affect the throwing attacks of The Smithscript Cirque.
- Dual wield attacks with Spears now cause less damage in PvP scenarios.
- The Pata weapon inflicts less damage on other players.
- The „Spread Crossbow“ weapon no longer triggers headshot damage motion when hitting other players.
Skill
Scattershot Throw
- The damage caused by this skill against other players has been lowered.
- It no longer triggers headshot damage motion when hitting other players.
Discus Hurl
- This skill's damage animation value against other players has been decreased.
Weed Cutter
- The poise value of follow-up attacks with this skill against other players has been reduced.
General Balance Adjustments
Gear
Several weapon types saw increased attack speeds for uncharged heavy attacks. These include:
- Daggers
- Throwing Blades
- Straight Swords
- Great Swords
- Colossal Swords
- Heavy Thrusting Swords
- Curved Swords
- Twinblade Swords
- Katanas
- Great Katanas
- Axes
- Flails
- Great Spears (excluding Serpent-Hunter)

The Great Katana's left-handed attacks now have a longer delay when transitioning to right-handed attacks.
Hand-to-Hand Arts have increased damage and a shortened recovery time between normal and follow-up attacks.
Colossal Swords now cover more distance when attacking and have faster initial normal attacks.
The Backhand Blade saw a reduction in attack speed for normal attacks from a crouching position.
Certain Small and Medium Shields now provide better physical attack damage negation and increased guard strength.
Cancelling one-handed normal attacks with the Swift Spear will now take longer.
The Smithscript Dagger has an extended throwing attack range.
Rellana's Twinblade now has improved attribute scaling for lower Intelligence and Faith attributes.
The Rellana’s Cameo Talisman has a reduced delay for activating its damage enhancement and the enhancement itself is increased.
Techniques
Light Weapon Art now has an increased attack speed.
For Darkness, the attack speed has been boosted.
Dynastic Sickleplay sees reduced stamina consumption, increased poise damage of follow-up heavy attacks, and an extended movement range for the initial follow-up heavy attack. The recovery time for the second follow-up heavy attack when hitting another player has also been adjusted.
Performing Shield Strike now has a longer cancellation time for other actions.
For Moon-and-Fire Stance, the light wave range, poise damage, and attack speed of normal attacks have been increased. The poise damage from heavy attacks has also been improved, along with the damage animation recovery time when hitting another player with a heavy attack.
Devonia's Vortex benefits from increased attack power and an extended Great Hammer’s spin range. Additionally, there is an improvement in poise value and generation speed, and adjustments in the damage animation recovery time when a charged attack hits another player.
Magic
Rellana’s Twin Moons now has an increased attack range for both the first and second attacks. The knockback distance of the second attack has been shortened.
Sacred Spells
Improvements to Aspects of the Crucible: Thorns include increased attack power, higher stamina attack power against guarding enemies, and a close-range hitbox that follows player movement.
Aspects of the Crucible: Bloom benefits from an increased attack speed and larger hitbox. The recovery time between using this incantation and subsequent actions has been shortened.
Divine Bird Feathers sees a decreased minimum delay between consecutive hits and increased range.
Furious Blade of Ansbach now offers a quicker transition to rolls, boosted poise damage, and increased enemy knockback distance.
Midra’s Flame of Frenzy has increased attack speed and a wider Frenzy status build-up range against enemies, but decreased the build-up when using the skill.
Bayle’s Flame Lightning gains increased attack power.
Bug Fixes
The latest patch addressed numerous gameplay and performance issues in Elden Ring. Here's what has been fixed:
- Black Pyreflies Items: These now reappear correctly when players rest at a site of grace.
- Stamina Consumption: Performing a Light Greatsword heavy attack while jumping now correctly consumes stamina.
- Weapon Skills with Ballista: Unintended Weapon Skills could no longer be used when the Ballista is equipped in the left hand.
- Critical Hit Damage: Adjusted critical hit damage to Taylew the Golem Smith when using specific weapons.
- Runes Acquisition: Players are now able to acquire runes when an enemy is defeated while holding a shield.
- Inescapable Frenzy Incantation: The hitbox is now accurately generated when casting this Incantation with the Staff of the Great Beyond.
- Backstab Hitboxes: The smaller-than-intended fist hitbox for whiffed backstabs with the Pata weapon has been fixed.
- Lizard Greatsword: Some of its attacks that weren’t previously registered as strike attacks are now corrected.
- Euporia's Luster: Resolved the issue where Euporia might increase the attack power of other weapons when its luster is restored. Also fixed the display issue where this effect was sometimes shown on different weapons.
- Weapon Skill Power: Corrected a bug where the power of some right-handed Falx Weapon Skills varied depending on the left-hand weapon level.
- Enchantment Effects: Specific skills‘ enchantment effects applied correctly only to attacks using weapons.
- Player Motion with Lock-on Skills: Corrected incorrect player motions when using lock-on for Wild Strikes, Spinning Strikes, and Unending Dance.
- Rolling Sparks Skill: The issue of this Skill going through some terrain has been addressed.
- Blades of Stone Spell: Adjusted to hit targets at varying height levels correctly.
- Bayle’s Tyranny Incantation: Some of its attacks not hitting multiple enemies and going through certain terrain were fixed.
- Godfrey’s Icon Talisman: Now applies correctly to all Skills, Spells, and Incantations.
- Crepus’ Vial Talisman and Unseen Form Spell: Corrected the translucency effect issue when these are used together.
- Rellana, Twin Moon Knight Hitboxes: Adjusted the hitboxes of some attacks to match the intended specifications.
- Inventory Menu “Leave” Option: The “Leave” option is now selectable in the inventory for all equipment.
- Site of Graces Interaction: Fixed the issue making some Sites of Grace difficult to touch.
- Invasion Spawn-in Position: Corrected the spawn-in positions in certain areas for invasions.
- Area Name Display: Corrected displayed names of certain areas.
- Combat State Post-Invasion: Fixed a bug preventing the release from combat state after defeating an invading NPC.
- Effect Display: Resolved issues where effects were not correctly displayed.
- Watchful Spirit Incantation: Ensured its attacks are visible to other players in multiplayer.
- Tool and Incantation Effects: Corrected the application of effects when deflecting or canceling.
- Performance Improvements: Several performance improvements enhance gameplay stability.
- Descriptive Error Correction: Corrected a descriptive error in the game credits added in patch 1.12.
The patch enhances player experience and ensures smoother gameplay and interactions.
Possible Unstable Performance Fixes
To address performance instability on the PS5, players can use the „Rebuild Database“ option available in the device’s safe mode. This can help improve framerate issues that may occur during gameplay.
For PC users, it is important to ensure that Ray Tracing is not unintentionally activated, as this can cause performance problems. To check this setting, navigate to „System“ > „Graphics“ > „Ray Tracing Quality“ from either the title screen or the in-game menu.
A message stating „Inappropriate activity detected“ may appear for some PC players without any actual cheating. To resolve this, players should verify the integrity of the game's files before restarting.
Additional performance issues on the PC version can be caused by third-party applications that manipulate mouse behavior. Disabling these applications may help stabilize the game’s framerate.
