Fmpone Unveils Completed Cache Remake

The launch of the Cache map restoration in Counter-Strike 2, crafted by the renowned mapmaker FMPONE, is a significant development for gaming enthusiasts. Released on March 3 via the Steam Workshop, this remastered version marks an eagerly anticipated return nearly six years after its removal from the official selection by Valve.

FMPONE's dedication to revamping Cache began almost a year ago, when he started revealing images of the update. Though its release in the Steam Workshop signals progress towards its appearance in CS2, players might need to practice patience before experiencing it in Premier matches.

Cache Makes a Stunning Return to CS2

The long-anticipated return of Cache to Counter-Strike 2 was confirmed by map designer FMPONE on March 3 via a social media announcement. Gamers eager to experience the revamped map can do so by visiting the Steam Workshop, subscribing to the map file, and restarting CS2 to see it available under the Workshop tab in Play mode.

Prior to the official unveiling, leaks circulating within the gaming community showcased the map, potentially accelerating its release. Despite the advance peeks, the map impresses with remarkable visual updates, maintaining the gameplay essence of its CS predecessor. Significant alterations are minimal, with the most notable change occurring in the CT mid section. Access to the window is now restricted, requiring defenders to use boosts to obtain visual access through the gap.

Visually, most enhancements focus on graphic refinement. The 2019 version, known for its abundant greenery, faced criticism due to reduced player visibility. To address this, many foliage elements have been removed, enhancing clarity. However, Cache remains vibrant through the strategic use of bold colors in textures and panels. The balance between aesthetic appeal and competitive necessity is achieved with brighter lighting and vivid hues, ensuring essential visibility without sacrificing visual charm.

Key Changes to Cache:

  • Access to CT mid window now needs a boost.
  • Reduction of greenery from the previous version for better visibility.
  • Improved lighting and bold textures enrich the map experience.

These updates establish Cache as both visually striking and competitively viable, ready for players to explore once more in CS2.

Players Miss a Key Feature in Cache Remake

Cache, a popular map in the Counter-Strike series, exited the Active Duty map pool in March 2019 when Vertigo took its place. FMPONE later introduced an updated version of Cache for CS, though it never rejoined the Active Duty roster and wasn't slated for inclusion in CS2.

The latest iteration of Cache became accessible to keen players via the Steam Workshop. Many embraced the updated design, yet a notable visual element is missing: the well-known graffiti celebrating s1mple's remarkable play.

The original Cache map in CS featured graffiti that memorialized a legendary moment from a Counter-Strike Major, specifically s1mple's falling double kill and no-scope with an AWP. This visual showed a character with wings holding an AWP, symbolizing the iconic event. In CS2, this tribute does not appear, sparking a variety of reactions among players.

Opinions on the absence of this artwork vary significantly. Some players lament the change, describing it as a „tragic“ loss of an important historical element. Others view the lack of graffiti as an opportunity for new memories to be made on the redesigned map. Without unanimous agreement, debate continues over whether the removal enhances or detracts from the experience.
