‚Call of Duty gets a subscription service in CoD 2.0‘

Things have been unsettled around Call of Duty for months. The interruption of the annual release of a new game and the takeover of Activision by Microsoft have caused much controversy. The arrival of a new subscription service, which is to be part of ‚CoD 2.0‘, can be added to this list.

In a job posting for a job at Activision, it becomes clear that the subscription service CoD 2.0 is in the works. The Call of Duty publisher calls the year 2022 a „great opportunity with a series of innovations. Part of these innovations include subscription-based content.

Activision calls CoD 2.0 a new era for Call of Duty. What we can expect from this new era and what role the subscription service will play in it is not yet clear. Because no official information has been shared yet, nothing meaningful can be said about a start date.

DLC in Call of Duty

The concept of players having to pay for content within Call of Duty is not new. Years ago, players had to pay around 15 euros for DLC in the form of „map packs. These map packs gave you access to about four new multiplayer maps and other, smaller content.

With the advent of the battle pass and the system of seasons, the map packs in Call of Duty disappeared. In recent years, new content in the form of weapons and maps has been provided to players for free. At first, this seemed like a positive development. However, the quality of this content, according to seasoned Call of Duty players, has been inferior.

With this knowledge of the history of DLC within Call of Duty in mind, it is interesting to speculate on the role of a subscription service within CoD 2.0.
