Players who notice delays between their actions and the game’s responses often deal with high latency. In fast-paced matches, even small delays can change the outcome. Understanding this issue begins with seeing real-time connection data rather than guessing what is causing lag.
Fortnite includes a built-in feature called Net Debug Stats that helps players monitor their ping and network stability. Enabling this option provides clear information about performance on PC, console, and mobile, helping players identify whether connection issues or gameplay errors affect their results.
How to Show Ping in Fortnite
Players can enable a real-time display of their connection quality through Fortnite’s built-in settings. This option isn’t found under Video Settings, where many expect it, but in the Game UI section of the main menu. Activating it takes only a few short steps and allows players to see both ping and packet loss while playing.
Follow these steps carefully:
- Press Esc (or Start/Options on a console) to open the sidebar menu.
- Select the gear icon to enter Settings.
- Press Tab three times to move to the icon that resembles a screen with interface elements.
- Scroll down to the HUD Options section.
- Find Net Debug Stats and switch it ON.
- Confirm the change by pressing the appropriate confirm button for the platform, such as Triangle, Y, or A.
Once this is on, Fortnite will display small numeric data near the minimap. This information helps players understand their connection performance.
| Metric | Description | Recommended Range |
|---|---|---|
| Ping (ms) | Time for data to travel to the server and back. | 0–20ms: Excellent • 20–50ms: Acceptable • 100ms+: Noticeable delay |
| Packet Loss (%) | Measures lost data packets sent or received. | 0% ideal; anything higher may cause movement stutter or delayed actions |
The ping display shows whether connection issues stem from the network rather than system performance. For a complete diagnostics view, players can also go to the Video tab and toggle Show FPS. Combining ping and FPS overlays allows them to distinguish between connection- and hardware-related lag sources quickly and accurately.
