Apex Legends Expands Matchmaking Test
Apex Legends continues to refine its approach to matchmaking, with recent adjustments aimed at improving the experience for players in higher competitive tiers. Previous restrictions produced mixed outcomes, but they also offered valuable insights that are shaping the next phase of testing.
The development team has outlined clear priorities for these changes. Their focus is on creating balanced matches by narrowing rank differences, even if this means players wait a little longer in queues. They also aim to provide better transparency so players understand why they are placed in certain lobbies.
Strict Rank Restrictions
The adjustment introduced on July 17 placed Masters players into matches only with other Masters or with Diamond I competitors. This boundary aimed to refine balance at the top end of Ranked play.
Key outcomes included:
- Match search times: Median queue duration remained unchanged.
- Queue dodging: +7% increase among players at Diamond I and above.
- Playtime shifts: Diamond I participants logged more hours, while Masters activity declined.
| Group | Effect on Playtime |
|---|---|
| Diamond I | Increased |
| Masters | Decreased |
Feedback indicated the community generally accepted the experiment positively.
Masters Facing Diamond II Next?
Respawn may soon adjust the ranked matchmaking threshold so that Masters players face not only Diamond I but also Diamond II competitors. This potential expansion could even reach Diamond III, though it will stop short of including Platinum ranks to preserve balance.
- Current limit: Masters vs. Diamond I
- Possible update: Masters vs. Diamond II–III
- Not included: Platinum and below
This shift would slightly broaden queues while maintaining competitive integrity.
