How Does the Prestige System Work in Modern Warfare 4

Activision has officially revealed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, offering a closer look at its multiplayer through a new trailer and early hands-on impressions. Alongside fresh gameplay details, you now have clear information about how the Prestige system will function when you start climbing the ranks.

The updated Prestige structure introduces meaningful choices that shape your multiplayer progression. As you level up, you will decide how to approach Prestige and what it means for your loadouts, unlocks, and long-term progression in Modern Warfare 4.

Does Modern Warfare 4 Bring Back Traditional Prestige?

Yes, you can use a traditional Prestige system in Modern Warfare 4. After you reach the standard level cap of 55 military ranks, you can reset your progression and start again from level one.

When you choose this route, the game locks your weapons, equipment, perks, and other unlocks. You must earn them again by ranking up. In return, you receive a new emblem and additional rewards tied to each Prestige level.

You can repeat this process multiple times, working through a set number of Prestige levels. As you continue, you move closer to Master Prestige, which permanently unlocks all multiplayer content. After that, you continue leveling beyond the normal Prestige tiers without losing access to your gear.

Infinity Ward did not limit you to a single progression style.

If you prefer not to reset your unlocks, you can select an alternative path once you hit level 55. This second option allows you to keep your full loadout and progression intact. You still earn a unique emblem and other bonuses for your time.

The exact details of those rewards have not been fully outlined. However, the key difference is clear: one path resets your progress, and the other preserves it.

You can compare both systems below:

Feature Classic Prestige Alternate Path
Rank resets to 1 Yes No
Unlocks reset Yes No
Earn new emblem Yes Yes
Additional rewards Yes Yes
Master Prestige access Yes Not confirmed

This structure gives you direct control over how you progress.

If you enjoy the challenge of re-leveling and unlocking everything again, the traditional system remains intact. If you prefer to stay fully equipped at max rank, the newer option supports that choice.

Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, 2026, and both progression paths will be available in multiplayer at release.
